Learning to Import from the Exporting Networks

摘要：In this paper, we uncover a novel fact about the exporting and importing networks. Using China’s transaction level trade data over 2000-2006, we find that firms are more likely to import from markets where they have a previous exporting contact in proximate markets. To account for the firm’s endogenous export decision, we utilize an IV strategy that hinges on the removal of binding import quotas in 2005 which has generated a large export entry of firms in a set of potential new destinations. We then develop a structural framework to characterize the co-evolution of the firm’s exporting and importing networks. Our structural estimation confirms the impact of the exporting networks on the firm’s importing behavior, but not the reverse.
