The Impact of the Three Gorges Dam on Local Climate Change and Agricultural Adaptation

摘 要：

Using the initial impoundment of the world’s largest hydroelectric dam in 2003—an event hydrologists suspect having induced permanent climate changes in the vast Yangtze river basin—as a natural experiment, we identify differentiated adaptations among rural households with different endowment. In response to the decreasing precipitation downstream in the spring, households with limited access to market and finance adapt by increasing the cropping area to compensate the sizable 14% reduction in yield, while the resourceful, rich households in contrast, choose to migrate out for more non-farm opportunities, suggesting differentiated adaptations may have long-term distributional effect in welfare.

刘冲，北京大学经济学院助理教授，世界银行短期顾问。北京大学光华管理学院应用经济学博士（2013），清华大学经济管理学院博士后（2015），研究领域为公共经济学、发展经济学和政治经济学。近年来在Economic Journal、International Journal of Industrial Organization、Economics Letters、《经济研究》、《经济学（季刊）》、《世界经济》、《金融研究》等国内外著名期刊发表论文20多篇。先后主持国家自然科学基金、农业部农村经济研究中心研究基金等多项科研课题。
