The signalling effect of foreign bank entering domestic market

摘要：Using the Chinese data from 1999-2008, we find that the entry of foreign banks has a negative effect on the number of branches of local banks, while has a positive effect on the other kinds of  commercial banks. We point out those results are due to the signalling effect of foreign banks entering domestic market. The increasing number of foreign banks implies those foreign investors can conquer the liability of foreignness, and it release signals to attract similar domestic banks to enter the market. By analyzing the strategy of banks entering the local market, we confirm the existence of the signalling effect and the signal is about the property rights protection.

主讲人简介：罗知，教授，武汉大学经济系主任，经济发展研究中心（教育部人文社科重点研究基地）副主任，亚洲开发银行研究顾问，珞珈青年学者。研究方向为发展经济学和产业经济学，在World Economy, China Economic Review, Review of Development Economics, Economic System, Singapore Economic Review, China & World Economy, Annals of Economics and Finance,《经济研究》，《管理世界》，《中国工业经济》，《金融研究》，《统计研究》等期刊上发表论文数十篇，主持三项国家自然科学基金。曾获得《金融研究》年度最佳论文（Top1）、安子介国际贸易研究奖、湖北省社科奖等学术荣誉，担任《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《经济学（季刊）》、《中国工业经济》、《金融研究》众多权威期刊审稿人，国家自然科学基金通讯评委。
