摘要:This paper investigates how agricultural production growth affects education and labor market outcomes by exploiting a natural experiment, i.e., China`s land reform in early 1980s. The land reform introduces the household responsibility system and rewards labor input in farming. We first show that the land reform increases agricultural production substantially. We then find that the land reform decreases significantly the likelihood of finishing high school among teenages. We find no similar effects in urban areas or for lower-level education. In addition, the effect of the land reform on high school completion is larger in areas that are less suitable for agricultural production or suffered more during China`s Great Famine. Finally, we find that the land reform leads to a lower likelihood of being employed in the non-agricultural sector and less income about two decades later.
